How to Begin (and Maintain) a Healthy Habit?

How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle? or  Creating Healthy Habits.

In my point if view.
  • Begin small: Don't try to change your entire lifestyle all at once. Choose one small, achievable habit to focus on, such as drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning or taking a 10-minute walk after dinner.
  • Make a plan: Decide on a specific time and place to consistently practice your new habit. For example, if you want to start meditating, choose a quiet spot in your home and set aside 10 minutes each morning to sit in silence.
  • Track your progress: Use a journal or app to keep track of your habit, noting any changes or improvements you experience. This will keep you motivated and allow you to see your progress.
  • Find a accountability partner: Share your goals and progress with a friend, family member, or accountability group. This will help you stay on track and provide support when you're feeling discouraged.
  • Keep your goals in mind: Remember the reasons why you wanted to start this habit in the first place. Whether it's to improve your health, reduce stress, or increase productivity, keep those goals in mind and let them be your motivation to stay consistent.
  • Reward yourself: Celebrate your successes, no matter how small. Whether it's treating yourself to a favorite meal or taking a day off to relax, find small ways to reward yourself for sticking to your habit.
  • Be kind to yourself: Don't beat yourself up if you slip up or miss a day. It's okay to have setbacks, just don't let them discourage you from continuing your healthy habit. Instead, focus on the progress you've made and continue to strive for improvement.
Whether you want to run a marathon or learn how to play the guitar, here's how to get started.

IT'S GETTING CLOSE TO THAT TIME OF YEAR. Everyone you know is going to the gym, smiling while eating broccoli, or smoking their last cigarette. For some, the gym will truly become a new part of their lives, and the last cigarette they will ever smoke. But most of us have probably felt the disappointment, if not self-loathing, of failing to keep a New Year's resolution.

* Exercise Regularly.

I can't guarantee that the advice I've gathered will help—anyone who knows me would laugh hysterically at the thought of me guiding anyone toward successful habit formation—but there are some things you can do to set yourself up for success and ensure that your resolutions become more than that.

December 2022: I've added some reflections from a recent reread Getting Things Done of David Allen's.
 You Want Systems, Forget Goals.
The first and most important step in changing something in your life is to forget about resolutions and goals. Instead, consider creating a system that allows you to do what you want.
This advice came from James Clear's book Atomic Habits ($12 on Amazon). If this article whets your appetite for a deeper dive into how you can create better habits, Clear's book is a great next step. It contains numerous suggestions for how to set up systems that work for you and aid in the development of the habits you desire.
A common sense can help you a lot.. "Reduce friction wherever you can," says WIRED associate editor Adrienne So. Keep your shoes near the door to make it easier to go for a run. Keep fruit on the counter to make it easier to eat healthier. "It's easier to work out every day if you've prepared everything ahead of time," So says. Then you can sprint into the basement and complete a 30-minute Peloton strength video in 32 minutes, rather than spending another 20 minutes looking for a clean sports bra."

It also helps to be completely honest with yourself. For example, while some people might run downstairs and do a Peloton video, even that seemingly simple act causes me enough friction that I would never do it. This is why, rather than joining Peloton, I chose an activity with even less friction: body weight exercises. My body is always present and ready to go. I don't need to go anywhere or look for anything. I've only recently begun exercising.
That is, if you have to rely on the strength of your will, gritting your teeth and toughing it out, you are unlikely to make it a habit. That isn't to say that whatever you're doing won't be difficult at times, but it shouldn't be difficult to get started.
Do the Work
To be a writer, as one of my writing professors used to say, you have to sit in a chair and write. To be a yogi, you must practise yoga. To run, you must run. There is no getting around it. You must put on your adult shoes and get to work.

Some Tips to get Healthy Habits.

  1. Exercise regularly
  2. Eat a balanced diet

  4. Get enough sleep
  5. Manage stress
  6. Wash hands frequently
  7. Avoid tobacco and drugs
  8. Wear sunscreen
  9. Get regular check-ups
  10. Practice good hygiene

On the other hand, as Clear points out early in Atomic Habits, the only way to change who you are is to change what you do. "You are a writer every time you write a page. You are a musician every time you practise the violin. You are an athlete every time you begin a workout." Every time you do the work, you become the person you want to be in the future.
